I have just started to research our family tree and have family members called Willingale. My grandmother, Phyllis Willingale, is descended from a line of Willingales that I have only traced back to 1824 so far in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. My immediate family all lived in Dalton, Huddersfield. My father, whose middle name is Willingale, told me about the apocraphal story of the two sisters but also remembers some bottles of wine marked with a crest - two arrows and six symbols (three between the arrows and three in the corners). My mother's maiden name was Nora Willingale. She had a Brother Samuel and Sister Edna (both older). Her father was Christian Robert Willingale, who we think was born & lived in the Ilford, Essex area. We think he was a market gardener. He married Ada Stephenson, who lived in Stratford. My mother was born in 1913 (died 1999) and by then the family had moved to Sheffield. My grandfather had a sister - Elizabeth (known as Bessie) who had a child out of wedlock, Jeannie, who was mentally retarded. They remained in the Ilford area. My uncle Sam (born & bred in sheffield) produced 4 daughters, so the name stopped with him. The only other relative that I am aware of is 'Cousin Arnold (Willingale)', who again lives in Sheffield. Is this info. of any use to you? I was brought up in Willingale Doe from 1935 to 1951. I have made a sketch map showing the boundaries of the two Willingale parishes which are much intertwined and almost split in half by the parish of Shellow Bowels. an interesting web site, nice to see that the actions of old thomas are so well remembered, along with those of his son. Thomas was married to Hetty higgins, a sister of my great great grandfather joseph higgins; william higgins who stood trial with his two willingale cousins for the treachoury of lopping to keep his family warm was a cousin to my great grandfather joseph robert higgins. William died in 1870 from pneumonia,aged just 28,we beleive as a result of his short holiday at her majesty's pleasure !. what a small world we now inhabit with the internet, hello to the willingales from a higgins who knows your story well !.

I have just joined the Willingale society after prompting from my second cousin Kim. My mother was Constance Willingale married to George Adamson in Jan 1941. I was born in 1942. Married in 1965 to Antony Carr we have 2 sons Peter born 8th May1968 and Miles 27th January 1970. Peter is a vet married in 1995 to Rachel, a teacher, and now lives in newbury Berkshire -they have 2 children Thomas born 1st october 1998 and Emily born 9th December 2000. Miles qualified as an engineer but has worked with computers but now is the main carer for his 2 children. He married Jane in 2001, Rowena was born 27th February 2002 and Juliet 20th December 2004. Tony and I are both retired from lecturing and teaching and have time to enjoy the grandchildren as well as trying to trace our own respective family trees although we are not as effective as the Willingales have been. We keep loosing our relatives who appear to have changed their names.Finf it quite amazing to find that we have links to the local Willingales. As we are fairly local we hope to make it to a meeting soon and will go and see the plaque on the church in Loughton.

Hi I am the son of Beryl(nee Turner) daughter of Dorothy(nee Willingale).I am the current owner of the farm 'Willingale'in South Africa listed on your web site.The farm is 326km east from our house of Johannesburg and it takes about 3 and a half hours to drive there.We visit there once a month for a weekend.On the farm we have about 150 ha(375acres)of timber.The main timber grown is Eucalyptus used in mining as mineshaft supports and for thatch roofs.We also grow pine used for paper and planks.We have approximately 10ha of flat land with 1km of clean mountain river frontage.On the flat section we have a Trout Dam stocked with Rainbow Trout of about 1 acre in area.There are also about 10acres of Pecan nut trees.Unfortunately because we dont live there most of the nuts are eaten by the Vervet Monkeys who shake the trees so that the nuts fall to the ground which are then eaten by the wild pig and variuos species of buck.We used to have Avocado Pears but with the climate change ,the frost we get every year has killed all the trees.We have a house which was built by my mothers brother Sydney George Harry Turner in the 1960's on a very limited budget and with a lot of help from family and friends.It is built out of Slasto(a type of slate)quarried on the farm and transported by Ox Sleigh across the rough terrain about 3 km to the construction site.The walls of the house are therefore an adventure in themselves filled with fossilised plants and subject to much scrutiny.We also have a Guest cottage with a thatch roof.The farm is 40km east of Nelspruit and 70 km from the nearest gate into the Kruger National Park on the southern end.We fortunately do not have Malaria on the farm.Should you be interested in more information or photographs please feel free to contact me.Regards Garth

I grew up in Loughton in the twenties. My eldest brother's best friend was Jack Willingale (possibly John?)The Willingale family we knew lived somewhere in the vicinity of Forest Road. The Maitland family still lived in Loughton -possibly in the Rectory Lane area (then still undeveloped). The name of Maitland was still despised by the villagers, many of whom remembered Maitland's attempts to enclose the forest.As children we played in the forest and gathered "oak apples" that we sold for a penny as pig feed.

My great grandmother Mable was a Willingale. I have found her mothers grave (Annie died 1927) in St Pancras Cemetary in Finchley. Best wishes to all associated with the Willingale website. I hope you all have a merry Christmas and a happy new year and that the almost inevitable gulf war doesn't eventuate. Unfortunately we here in Australia are still battling the do-gooders and social engineers to maintain our country as a Christian country with pressure being exerted to prevent Christmas nativity and Santa Claus type events being held in kiddy type environments. The stupid thing about these lost souls is that the ethnic people they think they are helping are quite happy to witness our traditional Christmas festivities. That's enough preaching for now - i'll leave you cricketing fans with a bit of insight into Aussie fans view of England's unfortunate performances. We generally are a bit sorry for their under-performance and would rather see good cricket from both sides - but of course we still like to beat the "Poms". Hi My name is Ben Hunt, my mother Susan Hunt, neice of George Willingale recently deceased of Hartlepool, daughter of Joyce Willingale, she has been in touch with a Karen Willingale, my mother lost George in October this year, and I know it has come as a comfort to her that she has been able to proudly read about the family history. I would like to say how pleased I was to meet all of our cousins and their guests who attended the first WFS AGM on Saturday the 7th of December 2002 held at the Willingale Village Hall. Hello, I'm Steve Willingale from Sydney, Australia. I made an entry a few months ago regarding the high probability of being related to Thomas Willingale. I'm anxious to get over to Europe and G.B. in the not too distant future to get a feel for my ancestral roots. However, in the meantime I have my daughter Kelly Willingale, and her fiance travelling at present around Europe having a great time. She was a bit disappointed that she has to come back to Oz before the December meeting. But she'll be in the London area for a week between Nov 12 and 17 and she'll definitely be visiting the Essex area and in particular the museum and the Thomas Willingale pub (probably about Nov 15). So if there any Willingale's in the vicinity of the pub around that time then email me and we might be able to get another photo of some modern day Willingale's similar to the old one in the Willingale web-site. Hi. As with most other people have heard stories passed down from relatives about Thomas Willingale / Epping Forest etc. Believe my Dad's birth line comes from one of Thomas's brothers (?) For your info: my Dad is Colin John Willingale born 1937 in East Ham. His father was Ernest Walter John Willingale born in 1900 (but don't know where) and HIS father was Joseph Willingale (born around 1870ish...)! If this is of interest to anyone please feel free to e-mail me. My Dad gave me the above from the top of his head but my Mum (the sensible one) has more info if needed! My Grandmother's maiden name was Ellison and she said that a member of her family in the past was married to a Willingale and she spoke about the Lopping rights. My uncle told me of the story of Thomas, sadly he died two years ago he would have loved to have known of this sight,he told me Tom was imprisoned for pulling down the fences on more than one occasion. the story went on to say that queen Vic herself heard of the plight of Tom and the forest, and granted him a pardon and stated the fence must come down,and the land to remain common land. Very interesting website especially for somebody such as myself who's family has it's roots in the Willingales. My father was born at Hulkes Farm in 1922 and I have childhood memories of the area as my grandparents lived at Norton Heath for 50 years. Hi there - I never realised there were so many Willingales out there!! I've been living on the Gower, South Wales for the last 9 months having previously lived and worked in Lincoln. I was born in Sheffield and grew up in the Peak District in Derbyshire. I have twin sisters Catherine and Diane. I am married to Melanie (who is Welsh and the reason we're down here in Wales)and have a 2 year old daughter called Rachel Ffion Willingale. My Mother was Gladys May Willingale, daughter of Harry and May Willingale of Loughton. My Mother has three brothers surviving, Roy, Denis and Tom. Thomas Willingale was, I believe, their Great Grandfather. There are some interesting books on the subject of Thomas Willingale. I have some, which have been handed down to me. Others have been donated to a museum I believe. Possibly Queen Elizabeths Hunting Lodge at Woodford.

Hello , I'm emailing from Sydney, Australia. My daughter, Kelly, made an entry on this great website a few weeks ago, and I've since been in email contact with Graham Richards regarding the certainty of us being related. This site looks fantastic, and the idea of further promotion of it is a great idea. I've not been able to get in touch yet with my cousin, Bernie Willingale who went to the Essex region some 15 or so years ago to research our family tree - maybe some of you may remember his visit. But I'll definitely be in touch with him in July to let hom know what is happening. An interesting sidelight in my particular family tree - it appears that I am related on my mother's side to that great scientist and Antarctic explorer, Sir Douglas Mawson. I've not been able to officially confirm it yet but I thought it may be of interest to you. I don't have any particular suggestion or comment regarding today's meeting yet, but I'm sure I will in the near future. As I said to Graham , my daughter Kelly is travelling around Europe, and England/London in October of this year, and I dare say she will definitely visit your region and especially the museum and the "Thomas Willingale" pub.
