Thomas Willingale Axe

The Willingale Axe is allegedly the axe used by Thomas Willingale on 11th November 1860 when he asserted his ancient rights to go into the forest and lop branches from the trees of the forest. It is currently kept at the Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge, Chingford.

Originally built for King Henry VIII in 1543, the building was believed to have been used by Queen Elizabeth I after his death. She was responsible for a number of repairs undertaken to the building in 1589.

Thanks to the Staff of the Hunting Lodge for allowing me to photograph the Willingale Axe, as this item is not normally on display. See the Hunting Lodge website
