We would still like other Willingales to join the project, especially from the ‘Charles’ branch of the family, where despite testing three individuals, have yet to find a match that links this branch into the main family tree. Our conventional genealogical research seems to indicates ALL Willingales are related, so its disconcerting that we have yet to find a link from this branch.

Our latest DNA Tester is John who is from the problematic Charles branch. We have now tested 3 people from this branch and none have DNA which matches the DNA profile of Steven, Peter & Owen, who we have now confirmed are related via conventional genealogical methods.

John’s test does however match Williams. Our other tester from the Charles branch, Tom, has a completely different DNA profile again.

We seem to have 3 possible scenarios for the Charles branch:

1 Tom’s test is somehow spurious,

2 we have two non paternity events somewhere (or only one if Tom’s test is spurious), which we can now narrow down to two of 7 transmission events. What this would mean is that Tom, William and John although named Willingale, do not descend from the male Willingale line, i.e. we have another scenario similar to Keith.

3 The final scenario is that the Charles branch is distinct from the other Willingale line and our conventional genealogical research is wrong, i.e. that there are two separate distinct lines of Willingale’s, who are not related to each other, but sharing the same surname.

Members can see a full analysis of the DNA project here.

We have some confusion over how far back the most recent common ancestor is between these 3 people. Owen and Steven are 16 transmission events apart, yet some of the online DNA calculators put the MRCA as being over 30 transmission events apart.

We received Thomas’s DNA test results back yesterday. These we supposed to confirm if the Charles Willingale branch was distinct from the other Willingale branches; William our original tester from this branch has very different DNA to mine & Peter’s DNA. We therefore needed Thomas’s DNA to confirm if Williams DNA difference was the result of a ‘non paternity event’ or not. William and Thomas are 3rd Cousins, once removed.

Unfortunately Thomas’s results are very different to Williams and also very different to mine & Peters! The latest DNA results grid can be found here and more details are available to members here.

We are now awaiting Owen’s results, due some time in September, which will hopefully allows us to confirm the DNA profile for the Thomas, John, William and Samuel branches of the Willingale family.

We are pleased that another Willingale has agreed to join the DNA Surname Project. Owen Willingale, who is a descendant of Thomas the Lopper, is from the ‘John’ branch of the main Willingale family tree. Hopefully we should have his results back in a couple of months. We are expecting the DNA results of another new member of the project, Thomas Paul Willingale, back from the lab shortly within a couple of weeks.

Click to see current DNA results

Thomas Paul Willingale is from the unconnected ‘Charles’ branch, the same branch as William Willingale, whose earlier results did not match my or Peter Leslie’s results. Thus, Thomas results should help confirm if the ‘Charles’ branch is distinct or whether it does link into the main connected Willingale line. Owens test should help confirm the base DNA profile of those people from the main Willingale family tree.

Thomas and Owen are the 5th & 6th participants in the project.
